Screw you, history, and your infernal repetition! For the second consecutive year, ORF's season fell short of a championship due to rival Sparkly Sunday Pick-up.
One might question if it can be categorized a rivalry since we've lost all 3 contests... For whatever reason, these old guys seem to have our number! ORF led 5-2 at half but struggled handling against the zone in the second half, despite the mild winds. Costly turnovers (many just outside our own goal) paired with shaky defense allowed Sparkly to take a 2 point lead late in the game.
Down 8-10, ORF scored right before the soft cap, and was facing a one-point defecit, game to 11, with Sparkly going downwind. After a Sparkly turnover, ORF valiantly scored upwind to force a 10-10 tie! Poised to win, ORF was facing a down-wind point with a line of defensive superstars. Unfortunately, ORF's pull was a hardcore shank out of bounds 20 yards from their own line, handing sparkly incredible field position. In the end, Sparkly only needed 3 passes to score, the final being a break-mark lift into the middle of a very chaotic endzone.
It was a tough loss but we raise our hats to the repeat champions, Sparkly Pickup. Their veteran handling is the deepest in the league, and is hard to beat late in the season. MVP was Aaron, who used his speed to create some big plays on defense and keep ORF in the game. |
